Work experience week at WDC
We recently had sixth form student Isla join us for a week of work experience and what a pleasure it was. We couldn’t wait to share some snippets of what she got up to during her time here at WDC.
As an A-Level student, Isla wanted to further her skills in design and learn more about the tools we use in our interior design projects. We set her up with an interior design project to work on throughout the week, with the brief – ‘Design a reusable retail pop-up that captures the essence of a brand and delivers a compelling, customer-focused experience – considering product display, brand identity, target audience, and opportunities for interaction’. Using AI tools and various software packages she came up with a fantastic concept design within a shipping container.
We asked Isla some questions about what she has learnt and what she has enjoyed the most about working in a design agency.
1. When did your love for design start?
I’ve always liked design since I was really little, maybe from about 10 years old. I've always loved drawing.
I used to draw floor plans of our house and redesign our house and bedrooms and it kind of just developed from there.
2. What made you choose WDC Creative for your work experience?
Looking on the website it was really clear on what you do and that you offer lots of different things, so I think that made me want to join you for work experience.

3. Can you talk us through what you’ve been up to this week?
I was given a brief to make a pop-up store for a brand of my choice, so I have gone through benchmarking and researching the company.
I worked with AI to find some pictures that I like for inspiration then I went on to do some initial sketches and ideas and I’ve been using SketchUp to create my idea.
4. What was your favourite part about working in the studio?
Probably the atmosphere, everyone in the team is really nice so it's been enjoyable.

5. Which part of design do you enjoy the most?
Probably creating it and thinking of all the different ideas but also, I love seeing the final work done it’s so rewarding.
6. What have you learnt from your week with us?
I think being able to see the process of how it actually happens from the beginning and what benchmarking is because I didn’t know that before.

7. What would be your dream client/project?
A luxury brand like Dior or Chanel.
8. Do you think you will pursue a career in design in the future?
Yes definitely. I would love to work in design.

We loved having Isla here for the week and enjoyed supporting her in this valuable experience.
We hope she has learnt a lot from her time with us, and we can’t wait to see what the future holds for her.
The design sector can offer an exciting and varied career, where no day is the same and creative thinking is actively encouraged.
